The AJCU Virtual Reference Service provides online reference help to the primary clientele of the participating Jesuit institutions, including the
Library and Instructional Design Studio services are provided to registered students and faculty who are taking or teaching courses at sites other than on the University campuses. This includes courses at local hospitals, corporate offices, or online courses offered in-state or out-of-state.
Materials not owned by UDM Libraries may be requested through the traditional Interlibrary Loan service.
Interlibrary Loans may take 2-6 weeks, and may include books, journal articles, conference proceedings, government documents and other print materials.

One of the major services points in each of the University of Detroit Mercy Libraries is the Reference Information Desk. Located within direct eye view of the respective entrances, the desk is staffed all hours the libraries are open by a degreed librarian
It is the management philosophy of the University of Detroit Mercy Libraries/IDS that a degreed librarian be on duty at each reference desk all hours the libraries are open. Librarians are educated and trained on reference sources, online searching, teaching research skills, and conducting reference interviews. By asking the right questions of patrons who are doing research, the librarian is better able to help narrow or broaden the research subject, select synonyms for searching, and guide the researcher to the appropriate sources.

In the librarian consultant program, each UDM librarian is assigned to work with a number of academic programs for collection development and evaluation. In turn, the college or school Dean designates a faculty liaison from each academic program to work directly with a librarian.
