Professional Communication Societies and Associations

National Communication Association (NCA)

The NCA is a scholarly society that promotes research, teaching, and scholarship in communication. The website includes information and statistics about college and university communications programs, assessment resources, service learning resources, and information on grants and other funding sources.

Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ)

The SPJ promotes excellence, diversity and ethics in journalism with the goal of sustaining freedom of speech and the press in the United States. The SPJ website includes resources on diversity, freedom of the press, and journalism ethics. It also has a calendar of workshops and seminars, and members-only job and scholarship postings.

Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE)

IRE is an educational organization promoting quality in investigative journalism. Their website includes tip sheets, reporting guides, investigative reports, a database of government data, a campaign finance information center, free job postings and resume database, fellowships, scholarships, and awards. It also has a journalism educators’ section with course syllabi and resources.

Society of Broadcast Engineers (SBE)

The SBE advances the profession of broadcast engineering through scholarship, continuing education, and discussion. The SBE website includes information on certification programs and exams, job postings, a members-only resume database, a directory of contract engineers, a code of ethics, and information on conferences and conventions

National Press Photographers Association (NPPA)

The NPPA promotes professional development, high ethical standards, quality work, and freedom of the press for professional news photographers. Their website includes news, ethics and copyright information, portfolio critiques, competitions, and a members-only job bank, The site also provides an independent photographers toolkit including copyright resources, business forms, negotiating tips and more.

Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC)

The AEJMC is a nonprofit association that promotes research, multiculturalism, and high standards in journalism and mass communication. The website has job postings, awards, and information on workshops and conferences.

Broadcast Education Association (BEA)

The BEA is a professional organization of professors, graduate students, and professionals that promotes research and teaching in electronic media. The website includes free job and scholarship postings, news, and many course syllabi. It also has a research clearinghouse with primers, guidelines and mentors for teaching research courses.

Association for Women in Communications (AWC)

The AWC is a professional society that promotes the advancement of women in all communications disciplines. The website includes a members-only resume database and job postings.
