Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters

1993

Citation:

During your thirty-five year career as a health care educator and administrator, you have distinguished yourself as a dedicated and visionary leader in this field. From your early days as a teacher and researcher at the University of Michigan and the University of Wisconsin to your roles as the first president of both the Sisters of Mercy Health Corporation and Mercy Health Services to your current position as President Emeritus of Mercy Health Services, your contributions and successes have been numerous. Under your capable direction, Mercy Health Services has evolved into one of the largest health care systems in the United States. Your foresight and expertise contributed to the development of a unified system of institutions, programs and services that offers a broad continuum of quality health care. Consistent with Mercy Health Services' mission of serving the sick, the poor and the needy, you have worked tirelessly to ensure adequate access to quality health care by initiation new programs, testifying before congressional committees and serving on national health care committees that address this issue. Through the years, you have unselfishly shared your time and expertise as an active member of numerous influential health care organizations, including the American Hospital Association of which you served as Chairman of the Board. Other career highlights include the publication of more than 30 articles in professional health journals and the presentation of over 350 lectures. You continue to serve your profession through involvement on health care boards and consulting work. In recognition of your leadership in developing a value-oriented health care system that provides quality services and in promoting equal access to health care for all people, the University of Detroit Mercy is pleased to award you this Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree. Commencement, University of Detroit Mercy, May 15, 1993.
