President's Cabinet Award

1984

Bio:

Your life’s work as a cardiologist has given renewed and extended life to countless people.  With a single-mindedness of purpose and discipline you have devoted your life to the study of heart disease since earning your medical degree from Tulane University in 1949. Following your internship and residency here in Detroit at Henry Ford Hospital, and two years in the Army Medical Corps, you embarked upon a career combining research and practice, teaching at Tulane University while a visiting physician at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, then delving solely into research as Chairman of the Section on Cardiovascular Research at Henry Ford Hospital for nine years.  Since joining the University of Alabama School of Medicine in 1968, you have collected the highest esteem of your colleagues while steadfastly continuing your research in cardiology earning the title Mary Gertrude Waters Professor of Cardiology in 1976 and Distinguished Professor of the University in 1981.  Your selection as a Fellow of the American Heart Association; President of the Tenth World Congress of Cardiology to be held in 1986; President of the International Society and Federation of Cardiology in 1983-84; Master of the American College of Physicians and Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, is evidence of the respect you have earned as a leader as well as researcher among physicians.  Each of your accomplishments has been shared with the students at over 70 universities, medical schools and societies where you have lectured and with professionals through medical journals where you have served as editor.  The number of lives you have saved or changed through your work would be impossible to estimate.

Award was presented at the President’s Cabinet Annual Awards Dinner, May 19, 1984.
