Citation:

Tradition, honor, vision - these are the watch words of your family's heritage and the guiding values of your life. Like your father and grandfather you have dedicated your talents to your city, your community and your family. You have been a leader in the renaissance of Detroit. After completing your education at Georgetown and Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration, you returned to your native city determined to assist in economic and civic development. Over the last thirty years, your faith in Detroit has never wavered. Today as chairman and president of the state's largest bank, you continue to lend your knowledge to industry and community groups. You have pursued a better life for all of us through your work with the Mackinac Bridge Authority, your strong support of the United Foundation and the Greater Detroit Interfaith Round Table. As a family man, a leader in the financial world and as an active community volunteer, you represent a man in search of excellence. It is in a spirit of friendship and admiration that we confer upon you this Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree. Commencement, University of Detroit, May 16, 1987.
