Developments in the Syntheses of a Series of Bis-Bidentate Ligans Utilizing 4,4'-Methylenedianiline

A series of ligands, all incorporaing 4,4‟-methylene dianiline and utilizing two further donor atoms provided by a group of functional aldehydes, have been synthesized. Each ligand is a bis-bidentate moiety containing either four nitrogen or two nitrogen and two oxygen donor atoms. The stability of these ligands as free molecules as opposed to hydrochloride salts will be presented, as will their aqueous and organic solubility. Routine characterization has been by 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. This, as well as indications of their metal binding abilities, will be discussed.
