Summary

To examine if dental hygienist regularly perform intra and extra oral exams, blood pressure and glucose screenings. The survey that was taken by dental hygienist provides how many dental hygienists regularly perform intra and extra oral exams, blood pressure and glucose screenings.

The majority of the dental hygienists we surveyed have been practicing at a private office for more than twenty years and have one hour to complete each appointment. Most of these dental hygienists reported that there are no written guidelines for any of these screenings and the main barrier preventing them from performing blood pressure or oral cancer screenings is time, while the barriers for glucose screenings are lack of education and proper equipment. Almost two-thirds of them perform blood pressure screening at least once a year.  Greater than 90% perform intra and extra oral exams at least once a year and report never screening for glucose levels.
