Breastfeeding and Baby's Risk of Developing Diabetes

Conflitti, Antonella, and Bethany Morrell

The purpose of this paper is to attempt to answer the clinical question: “Are babies who are not breastfed, compared with those who are breastfed, at a higher risk of developing Diabetes Mellitus?” The clinical question takes a look at the protective aspects of breastfeeding, especially in reducing the risk of diabetes for the baby. There is a well-documented connection between breastfeeding and benefits for mom and baby. Diabetes was chosen as the focus due to the increasing prevalence in today’s society. It also poses a large impact on the cost of health care and places a strain on the health care system.
