IT IS CUSTOMARY, WHEN A MEMBER OF THE FAMILY GETS
MARRIED, TO TIE A HOUSEHOLD ROLLING PIN ON THE
NEWLYWEDS CAR OR IN THEIR BELONGINGS. THE ROLLING
PIN IS SUPPOSED TO SIGNIFY THE DOMESTICITY THE
WIFE IS GOING TO FORCE ON HER HUSBAND.

IT IS VERY OFTEN A PRACTICE IN APPLETON, WISCONSIN
TO STUFF THE CAR OF THE NEWLY MARRIED COUPLE WHILE
THEY ARE IN THE CHURCH. THE STUFFING IS USUALLY
DONE WITH NEWSPAPERS AND MAKES IT NECESSARY FOR THE
NEWLYWEDS TO REMOVE THE PAPERS FROM THE CAR BEFORE
LEAVING.

TRADITIONALLY OUR FAMILY OBSERVES ST. NICHOLAS' FEAST
DAY BY PUTTING THE CHILDREN'S SHOES IN FRONT OF THE
FIREPLACE. AFTER THE CHILDREN HAVE GONE TO BED, THE
PARENTS FILL THE SHOES WITH GIFTS AND CANDY.

WISCONSIN. INFORMANT'S GRANDPARENTS WERE IMMIGRANTS
FROM HOLLAND AND THIS CUSTOM IS ARDENTLY OBSERVED THERE.

TRADITIONALLY, THE CATHOLIC SCHOOLS AND MANY CATHOLIC
FAMILIES OF APPLETON, WISCONSIN MAKE ADVENT WREATHS
TO CELEBRATE THE ADVENT OF CHRISTMAS. THE WREATH
IS MADE OF EVERGREENS WITH THREE WHITE CANDLES
STANDING ERECT AND ONE PURPLE CANDLE STANDING IN
THE SAME MANNER.
