MRS. BARBERO HAS A CUT CRYSTAL BOWL OF FRUIT WITH LIGHT BULBS IN
DIFFERENT PARTS OF ITS STRUCTURE. IT IS A FAMILY HEIRLOOM. ON
CHRISTMAS EVE, SHE LIGHTS IT UP. IT SYMBOLIZES GOD'S BLESSING, IN
SO FAR THAT THE FAMILY DID NOT HAVE TO PART WITH IT; THE FAMILY
HAD ADEQUATE RESOURCES TO ENJOY AT CHRISTMAS. THIS CUSTOM HAD
ITS ORIGIN SUPPOSEDLY IN ITALY.

Submitter comment: MRS. BARBERO TREASURED THIS CRYSTAL TRADITION.

I learned this saying in Hillsdale, Michigan where I spent
most of my summers as a young boy, "If the corn is knee-high by
the 4th of July it will be a good crop". This was believed to be
true by all the local farmers.

James Callow comment: See Puckett, Ohio, no. 32659: "If the corn is knee-high
by the Fourth of July, it will be a good crop...."

I spent most of my summers as a young child in Hillsdale,
Michigan. At night we would always have campfires. I was always
told during these campfires that if there were a lot of stars out
that night the following day would be a clear one.

James Callow comment: Hand, North Carolina, no.6356: "They say if the stars are
thick it is a sign of fair weather."

A remedy or treatment that I learned at my parent's cottage
in Hillsdale, Michigan is that one can remove a leach that is
stuck to his leg or other body part by pouring salt right over
the leach. Doing this will simply cause the leach to fall off
without trying to pull it off.
