Interlibrary Loan Requests

Materials not owned by UDM Libraries may be requested through the Interlibrary Loan service. Depending on the delivery method, interlibrary loans may take 2-6 weeks. University of Detroit Mercy faculty, staff, and currently registered students in good standing are authorized to use this service. For students enrolled in classes that do not meet on the McNichols or Corktown campuses, electronic delivery will be used unless barred by license restrictions.

About Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service provided to obtain materials from other libraries for study and research that are not otherwise available in UDM's collections. The conditions of this service are set by the National Interlibrary Loan Code, 1993 (adopted by the American Library Association), local agreements, and the regulations of individual libraries.

What May be Ordered?

Books, photocopies of individual journal articles and book chapters (in accordance with the U.S. copyright law), conference proceedings, government documents, and theses and dissertations may be ordered. Individual may purchase a print copy of a dissertation directly from ProQuest. Payment for such a request is the responsibility of the ordering individual and payment is made directly to ProQuest.

The following materials cannot be supplied via InterLibrary Loan:

  • Books owned by University of Detroit Mercy Libraries (unless you are asking for the item to be shipped from one UDM campus to the other)
  • Textbooks being used for UDM classes
  • Entire volumes of a journal
  • Video, DVD, and CDs
  • Reference books
  • Newly published books
  • Bulky or fragile items
  • Rare or valuable materials such as manuscripts

How Long May it Take for ILL to Arrive?

After the online request is submitted, it may take 24-48 hours to process. Processing time may be extended if there is difficulty in identifying the resource that is being requested from the information provided. Requested resource may take from 2 to 6 weeks to arrive from the lending library, so it is important to plan ahead!

Where do I pick up the ILL?

Library personnel will notify you by telephone or email when the requested material arrives. All requests may be picked up at the Check Out & Customer Service Desk. Please do not remove the ILL band(s) from the requested book(s). Materials received electronically may be sent directly to requestors, depending on licensing restrictions.

How much does an ILL cost?

There is no service fee for ILL, with the following exception:If the lending library charges a fee, the requestor will be notified before the loan is processed. This gives the requestor an opportunity to decline to pay the fee thus stopping the loan from going forward. You will be notified of these charges, before the interloan request is processed.

Payment of all charges is due when the requested material is picked up. Fees may be paid by cash, check, or charged through InterDepartmental Charge at the Check Out & Customer Service Desk.

Please Note: Faculty will receive a receipt for cash payment to use against their UDMPU travel and professional development voucher allocation.

All online fees, handling, postage, and personnel costs are absorbed by the libraries.

Loan Period and Renewals

The loan period is determined by the lending library and is usually 2 to 4 weeks.

If a renewal of a book is needed, contact the ILL Department in McNichols Campus Library at 313 993-1072, or the Dental Library at 313 494-6901, at least 4 days before the due date. UDM Library personnel will contact the lending library and notify you if your renewal was accepted or denied. In accordance with interlibrary loan code, a renewal may not be requested for material that is already overdue.

Returning ILL Material

All materials borrowed through interlibrary (except articles) must be returned to the Check Out & Customer Service Desk where the materials were picked up, on or before the due date with the ILL bands attached.

Overdue and Lost Charges

Late return of interlibrary loans jeopardizes UDM's ability to borrow from cooperating libraries.

The overdue fee for borrowed materials is $.50 per day per item.

The replacement cost for lost ILL material is determined by the lending library and may include the cost of the resource, late fee, processing fee, and service fee.

Fees owed are to be paid at the Check Out & Customer Service Desk where the material was picked up. Failure to pay may result in a hold placed on the patron's University records.
